This week, we look back on the scream-inducing Game of Thrones meets Budweiser spot (that was also last year’s top ad of the year). Co-hosts David Griner and Ko Im sit down with two creative directors at Droga5 who worked on the campaign. Lauren Ferreira and Jono Paull recall what it was like to brainstorm in the war room, the logistics that all magically came together on set and how they kept that sharp, surprising, 90-degree head fake a big, fat secret.
“We really wanted to shock people on the biggest night of the year,” Ferreira said.
“It was not without its challenges,” Paull explained. “It was such a passion project.”
They also share what they’re interested in seeing for Super Bowl (now that they’ve raised the bar).
And ahead of the Lunar New Year, Wieden + Kennedy Shanghai ECD Vivian Yong asks: “In connecting with the competitive spirit, where can we manifest this spirit in Chinese New Year?”
Yong discusses how to avoid cliche when approaching cultural conversations, as Apple and Nike make marketing headways in China. Yong talks about the insight and inspiration of chasing the red envelope in the footwear brand’s spot.
