The Wing has made its first executive marketing hire, bringing Celestine Maddy on board as senior vice president of marketing and communications.
Maddy will oversee social media, creative and content, in addition to marketing and comms for the ever-expanding feminist coworking collective.
She previously served as vice president of marketing at Foursquare, managing brand strategy, communications and product and performance marketing. Before that, Maddy was vp of marketing at Reddit and has 15 years of experience working in tech startups, ad agencies and media, including as the founder of industry blog AgencySpy in 2008.
Maddy told Adweek she’s “truly thrilled to join The Wing,” calling the company “the perfect place to leverage my deep experience in tech and fast-paced industries to expand The Wing’s brand, reach and market.”
In a little over three years since its October 2016 founding, The Wing has expanded to include 14 locations in nine cities with over 10,000 members. Aiming to serve the unique needs of women workers, The Wing offers amenities like childcare, scholarships for those unable to afford membership, pumping rooms for breastfeeding parents, and even spa-like “beauty rooms” and showers with slippers and robes.
While initially established as a women’s club, The Wing has changed its policy to allow all genders. This was done not only to create an inclusive environment for nonbinary and gender-nonconforming members, but also because the company was hit with a $12 million male discrimination lawsuit and was investigated by the NYC Commission on Human Rights for excluding men as members.
“My experience at Reddit taught me innumerable things about the nuance of community and social networks, and at Foursquare we pushed to get to that magic $100M number,” Maddy said. “I’m excited to use those same skills to bring The Wing into their next chapter. I am looking forward to joining their amazing executive team to define the future of how women and nonbinary folks come together and lift each other up.”
Maddy’s hire adds to the already diverse high-level positions at The Wing; 50% of the company’s executive team are women of color. Overall, leadership at The Wing consistently breaks boundaries—such as when co-founder Audrey Gelman became the first visibly pregnant CEO featured on the cover of a business magazine for Inc.’s September 2019 issue.
Gelman told Adweek she’s “thrilled” to welcome Maddy to the team.
“She is a visionary and a creative leader who immediately recognized the immense opportunity areas for The Wing,” Gelman said. “[She has] institutional knowledge around community building, is an excellent storyteller, and deeply invested in building happy, high-functioning teams and nurturing talent. Celestine is going to be a transformative addition to our executive team and The Wing community.”
