  • Google News Initiative Establishes Journalism Emergency Relief Fund

The Google News Initiative created a Journalism Emergency Relief Fund to provide aid to small, midsized and local news publishers globally during the coronavirus pandemic.

Publishers producing original news for local communities have until Wednesday, April 29, at 11:59 p.m. PT to fill out this form and apply for funding.

The Google News Initiative said on the page for the fund that money will be disbursed to publishers who are selected in single installments, in either U.S. dollars or euros, depending on their locations, and amounts will range from the low thousands for small, hyperlocal newsrooms to low tens of thousands for larger organizations.

In a separate initiative, charitable arm will donate a total of $1 million to the International Center for Journalists, which will use the money to provide immediate resources to support reporters globally, and to the Columbia Journalism School’s Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma, which will help journalists who were exposed to traumatic events during the Covid-19 crisis.

Google vice president of news Richard Gingras said in a blog post, “Local news is a vital resource for keeping people and communities connected in the best of times. Today, it plays an even greater function in reporting on local lockdowns or shelter at home orders, school and park closures, and data about how Covid-19 is affecting daily life. But that role is being challenged as the news industry deals with job cuts, furloughs and cutbacks as a result of the economic downturn prompted by Covid-19.”
